A lack of a sewage system is serious issue and Dubai still hasn't fully addressed the issue. As a result, poop trucks continue to haul human waste from the inner city of Dubai to sewage treatment centers in the outskirts of the city every single day. This video describes reasons why Dubai doesn't have a good sewage system and the future of Dubai's sewage. Burj Khalifa has a large number of trucks carrying the human waste of Dubai. These trucks were also carrying human waste collected from large buildings like the Burj Khalifa itself and other major centres. To have a better understanding of the problem let us first try to understand how Dubai was built. Burj Khalifa, When the building was underway, the decision of not building a sewerage system was taken because it was certainly not a profit statement. As the sewerage system was not directly adding to the revenue, it was ditched. But here is the thing to understand. The whole discussion does not mean that the Burj has no sewerage system, but it stands for the fact that this building’s sewerage system is not directly attached to the city’s main sewers. Reason being that the city’s sewers and sewerage facilities lacked capacity and could not hold up for a building that would be such a huge source of influx. The focus at that time was just to get done with the project and start generating revenue because that was the need of the hour. Spending millions of dollars and time on linking this system to the mains didn’t sound like a great idea to the stakeholders of both the Burj and the city. They went with the conclusion that for a short period trucking the waste out of the building to any landfill site would be cheaper but when the Burj went up and running it produced way more waste than expected. Courtesy of its holding capacity of 35,000 people, Burj Khalifa produces 7 tons of poop every day, double that with the wastewater - you would need an average vacuum truck each day or a larger one every other day. Replicate that across the city and that’s why you have lines of trucks ferrying the stuff away daily. Sometimes the truck has to remain in the queue for more than 24 hours before it gets a chance to dump the waste, With time, as the city continued to progress in terms of construction but unluckily all newer buildings met the same fate. Dubai’s main concern was still to continue being the attraction it was. The trucking system was pretty much getting their job done but then they started to focus upon building an effective sewerage system because it was giving birth to a lot of health issues. Again, these were just minor investments to deal with public concerns. It took them years to make a final decision on the sewerage fiasco as in 2017 they decided to spend $8 billion for building an efficient sewerage system. They call this project ‘Development of the Century’ and it certainly is because it is the most advanced sewerage system in the entire world. The management of wastewater will also enhance the production to millions of litres of irrigation-friendly water. Dubai’s new sewerage system is still in its initial stages and for it to see completion a lot of work, time and finances are required. This new system is projected to see completion in 2025 and fortunately, so, it will be able to last well past 2050 and will eliminate most of the tankers. The Burj itself is an iconic landmark and for obvious reasons, also a favourite among property buyers and tenants. Any apartment higher than the 20th floor in the UAE can give you amazing views. From Jacuzzis to valet parking there isn’t any amenity that the Burj does not offer and soon with a purposefully designed sewerage system, everything will become smoother than ever.
