Solange is a singer, songwriter, record producer and actress. She expressed an interest in music at an early age and got her start as a backup dancer for Destiny’s Child, which featured among the other members her sister, Beyoncé. At 16, she signed with her father Mathew Knowles’ management company and record label, Music World Entertainment. She went on to release her first studio album, Solo Star (2002). It peaked at number forty-nine on the U.S. Billboard 200 and number twenty-three on the Top R&B / Hip-Hop Albums. The album produced two singles: “Feelin’ You” and “Crush,” which was produced by The Neptunes. The single “Crush” was renamed “Don’t Fight the Feeling” and was included on the movie soundtrack for The Fighting Temptations, which stars Beyoncé. Solange’s second studio album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams (2008), another Music World release, deviated from the pop sound of her first album to a Motown inspired one. It peaked at number nine on the US Billboard 200. Her third, fourth, and fifth albums all received critical acclaim, respectively. A Seat at the Table became her first number one album in the United States. She has been honored with the “Impact Award” at Billboard Women in Music and ranked by Billboard as the 100th most successful dance artist of all-time.
