Next generation YotaPhone unveiled at Mobile World Congress

(26 Feb 2014) LEAD IN: Yota Devices has upgraded its two way YotaPhone so that it is now fully touch enabled. The innovative gadget combines a mobile phone and e-reader in one device. STORYLINE: A mobile phone and e-reader in one that's now fully touch enabled allowing users to respond to notifications on the always-on display. Yota Devices are presenting the new YotaPhone smartphone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. CEO of Yota Devices, Vlad Martynov explains that just one touch is needed and there is no need to enter a code to activate the display: "The beauty is I don't need to pick up the phone. Wake it up, make a few clicks, to open Facebook icon, open applications, search what is new in the last couple of hours. It is always in front of my eyes. I just take one quick look and I know what is going on there. If it is something important, there's usually 10% of the spam I have there, but for example if my wife posts a picture of my daughter to Facebook, I have to go and make like (like it on Facebook), but with the new generation of YotaPhone it is not just one look it is also one touch." Further improvements on last year's device include an increase in the size of the AMOLED display to 5 inches. The EPD display (electronic paper display) is 4.7 inches, has higher resolution, greater pixel density and a built-in light. YotaPhone uses a Qualcomm quad-core 800 series processor, wireless charging, near-field communications (NFC) and high-performance integrated hands-free audio (IHF). A side-benefit to having two screens is that if a user needs to save battery power the phone has a Smart Power Mode, turning off the energy-consuming colour screen. All calls and messages can be answered and returned on the always-on display. This means a 50+ hours battery life saving. Analyst for the website Inside-Handy.de, Blasius Kawalkowski says he's impressed: "I think that it is a really nice device, on the one side you have a smartphone and on the other side you have an e-book reader, so you don't need two devices when you travel for example." YotaPhone went on sale in five countries in December 2013 and will go worldwide in the 1st quarter of 2014. The cost of the first dual-screen YotaPhone is $675, the price of the next generation model is still to be set.
