Want to connect your phone to your car’s stereo to listen to music or a podcast but not sure how? Watch this video to learn 3 ways to connect your phone to your car's sound system. If you have a newer vehicle, it will most likely have bluetooth capabilities. This means you can connect your phone to the stereo system wirelessly. The steps to do this will vary depending on what type of smartphone and what type of vehicle you have, but typically it will involve having your phone’s bluetooth settings open, and putting your car’s stereo system into a pairing mode so you can select it as a bluetooth device on your phone. Your car’s owner’s manual should have specific instructions on how to connect it. If your v ehicle has Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or another smart connectivity system, you may be able to do even more with this connection than just play music, such as linking navigation apps or hands-free phone calls and messaging. If your car doesn’t have bluetooth capabilities, you may be able to connect to the stereo system using a cord instead. This could be either a USB cord or an audio jack. The benefit of connecting with a USB cord instead of wirelessly is that this doubles as a way to charge your phone at the same time! Again the steps to set this up will vary depending on what type of vehicle you have, but if your car has a USB port, try plugging in your phone’s charging cord and see if you can switch your stereo system’s auxiliary input to the USB plugin to play music from your phone. Check your owner’s manual for specific instructions for your vehicle. If you have an older vehicle without any smart connection capabilities, there are still other ways you can connect your phone to your car’s stereo. There are different types of adapters you can buy that will add this capability to your vehicle. A popular one that works with any vehicle that has a radio are these FM transmitters. This would plug into your car’s lighter socket, and then this transmitter would connect to your phone via bluetooth. To connect it to your car’s stereo, the transmitter uses radio frequency, so you would set the transmitter to an FM radio frequency that is not used by a local radio station, and then set your car’s radio to that same frequency to listen. These transmitters will sometimes also double as a USB adapter, so you can also charge your phone at the same time. These are a great workaround option for older vehicles.
