Memet Ali Alabora | Creativity, activism, and starting over

Our guest this week on Pop & Politics is Memet Ali Alabora, an actor, director, and activist from Istanbul. In conversation with Kenan Behzat Sharpe, he described his many projects since moving to Wales in 2013, including the video gathering platform’ gather-in, his Meyhane Elsewhere project, the work his creative agency bak has done for the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP), and his hopes for the May 14 elections. Starting in the late 1990s, Alabora acted in numerous plays, television shows, and films. He is one of the founders of Actors’ Union of Turkey and served as its first president. He had to leave Turkey in 2013 after the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul after a smear campaign by pro-government media accused of him “orchestrating” the protests. Alabora is one of the human rights activists who is still being charged with life imprisonment in the Gezi trial. He left Turkey in 2013 and settled in Cardiff, Wales, where he has had a prolific and successful career as an actor, director, and more, including acting in a Welsh-language drama and touring across the UK and beyond with various theatrical productions.
