How Princess Zelda Got Her Name

How did one of gaming’s most famous characters get her name? I explore why Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto picked Zelda, and unearth the name’s roots to see how apt it is. Let’s return to when the Legend of Zelda was a mere Hyrule Fantasy. Princess Zelda’s name (and by extension the series’ title) is typically traced back to Zelda Fitzgerald, a renowned Jazz age author, but what other links to the past can be uncovered by digging deeper? This video reveals how her name has become more fitting as time has passed and her characterisation has evolved. It also shows how her name and that of her dark counterpart, Princess Hilda, share more in common than just a similar sound. And then there’s the fact that the series was originally called something else entirely! Perhaps the most famous high fantasy video game series in history, Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda is a pop culture touchstone, and it arguably owes a great deal to the mystique its name imbues. Like many of Nintendo’s feats this naming decision is often attributed to legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, but this is not strictly the truth! Watch now to get to the root of this and other Zelda secrets.
