EPRS Book Talk: Digital Empires: The global battle to regulate technology

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will introduce this Book Talk on Columbia University Professor Anu Bradford's new book ‘Digital Empires: The Global Battle to Regulate Technology’. The book focuses on the intensifying race between the European Union, the United States and China to regulate tech companies. All three have different visions of the digital economy and are trying to expand their sphere of influence. Digital Empires, which is a follow-up to Professor Bradford’s acclaimed book ‘The Brussels Effect’, examines these power relations. The book analyses the three regulatory models and explores the challenges that different approaches pose for companies, governments, and societies at large. According to Professor Bradford, digital societies are at an inflection point. The choices that governments, tech companies, and citizens will make will shape the future of the digital society for decades to come. The stakes for everyone involved are high and it remains to be seen which model will prevail. Professor Bradford will discuss her analysis with Members of the European Parliament who play a key role in shaping major EU digital legislation such as the Digital Markets Act and the Artificial Intelligence Act. The discussion will be moderated by New York Times technology correspondent Adam Satariano.
