Entirely written, edited. scripted and directed by: Linkai Liu In the spring of 2004, a new article was published in the Journal of Zhejiang University, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences entitled: “The Modern Shift of the Ru Tradition”. The article in question takes into consideration the historical context of Confucianism and the influence of Western values in China on renaissance of Ru tradition (Tu, 2004). Whilst poignant in the modern sphere of Chinese academic writing, the viewpoints are not surprising after learning the article was written by Tu Weiming, perhaps the single most leading figure in the school of New Confucianism, who insists that proper growth must come from treating strangers just as the way we love our families. Tu argues that from one’s identities between: the family, the ethnicity, the society, the country, and humanity all form a single central entity—one which points to the products of the four sprouts outlined by Mencius in the second book of the Analects: benevolence (仁), righteousness (义), propriety (礼), and wisdom (智). In many ways, Tu’s modern take on traditional Confucian values has also been attempted by many scholars, whom have all try to categorically initiate a nuanced discussion on the influence of the Ru tradition in modern China. Therefore, it can be argued that close examination of the current condition of Confucianism shows adaptation of Confucian virtues from the family up to the society. Chen, Y. (2013). " 1.
