English Advanced Vocabulary | Types of laughter

TRANSCRIPT Good morning, everyone! It is a happy Monday, and I am in a very good mood, so I decided to talk about something positive, and what can be more positive than laughter. We all know that laughter is the best medicine and that it strengthens your immune system and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. But since I am not a doctor, I am an English teacher, I decided to share with your different words that are used to express different kinds of laughter. For example, if someone laughs quietly, the word chuckle is sometimes used. For example, She was chuckling as she was reading the letter. The verb giggle is used when someone laughs in a quiet, childish way, often at something silly, or because they are nervous. For example, The girls were giggling at the back of the classroom. If someone laughs in an unkind and childish way, you can say snigger or snicker. For example, They sniggered at the shirt she was wearing. If someone disapproves of what you do, they might scoff, jeer, or sneer at you. Another unpleasant laugh is cackle, it is loud and unpleasant laughter usually associated with a witch laughing. The phrasal verb crack up or the phrase burst out laughing can be used if someone suddenly starts laughing. For example, I cracked up when I saw him wearing a funny hat. I fell over the chair and everyone burst out laughing. If there are lots of people laughing loudly, you can say that you can hear roars of laughter. I am sure there are other words for laughter, but these are the ones I wanted to share with you today. Have a great day full of smiles and laughter! Bye!
