APT8 / Slavs and Tatars Lecture-Performance: The Tranny Tease

A special artist lecture-performance by acclaimed art collective Slavs and Tatars. Through a focus on Turkic languages of the former Soviet Union, The Tranny Tease explores how transliteration (the conversion of scripts) can act as a method of resistance, highlighting notions of identity politics, colonialism, and faith. Slavs and Tatars is an artist collective whose practice spans a range of media, disciplines, and cultural registers. Their work often addresses the shared sphere of influence between Slavs, Caucasians and Central Asians. This lecture-performance is held in conjunction with 'Slavs and Tatars: Mirrors for Princes' exhibition at Brisbane's Institute of Modern Art (24 Oct – 20 Dec 2015). The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) is the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art's flagship exhibition focused on the work of Asia, the Pacific and Australia. The 8th edition emphasised the role of performance in recent art, with live actions, video, kinetic art, figurative painting and sculpture exploring the use of the human form to express cultural, social and political ideas, and the central role of artists in articulating experiences specific to their localities.
