Tunisia: Hundreds Protest Arrest of Activists, Journalists; Demand Date for Polls | Firstpost Africa Hundreds took to the streets of Tunisia’s capital Tunis to demand the release of imprisoned journalists, activists and opposition figures, and for the setting of a date for presidential elections. The protest comes after the arrest of a prominent lawyer known for her fierce criticism of President Kais Saied. On the same day, two journalists were also arrested. The basis for Sonia Dahmani’s arrest is thought to be a controversial law known as Decree 54 which was signed by Saied in September 2022. Authorities say, that the law was introduced to combat fake news but critics say it is used to crack down on dissent.
