I found it difficult at first to move to a 7 string after having played so much on a 6. While I still play 6 string the majority of the time I thought I’d share how I was able to find comfort with that seventh string. It all comes down to building boxes from the 5th and 6th strings down to the 7th string. E string chords and scales have a single string to build out to, whereas A string chords and scales connect down to an octave on the low B string. Building octaves on guitar is essential to learning the neck and being able to replicate riffs in multiple locations. A good idea for practice is to take riffs you know and transpose them to the 7th string. If the root is on the E string then we find it’s position on the A string and build the octave box down to the B string.
