Once the epicenter of Colombia’s drug war, Medellin has reinvented itself. Now hailed as an example of innovation and sustainable development, the city has fought hard against the legacy left behind by the likes of Pablo Escobar. The late drug lord built in Medellin his cocaine trafficking empire, going so far as to finance the construction of an entire neighbourhood that still bears his name. The years of violence that ensued left their mark. Even after Escobar’s death, in many areas of the city the bloodshed continued.
