What is an API? It's for Automation, Processes, and Innovation

What is an API, or more importantly, what is it for? This introduction talks about three important aspects of APIs: Automation, Processes, and Innovation. Automation means that you can automate tasks by using digital building blocks that expose their capabilities through APIs. By automating tasks it becomes easier to scale them, to build services around them, and generally to solve problems in a way where (parts of) the problem are being solved with a pre-existing building block. Processes is the next level up from automation where multiple building blocks are being combined to implement processes. Once again, by using digital building blocks it becomes easier to build these processes. And by composing processes out of building blocks (external or internal) it also is ensured that others can build the same or a similar process, instead of each process being a highly complex but closed way how a problem is being solved. Innovation then builds on this idea of building blocks being available to change and improve existing processes. If existing processes are built on building blocks, then tweaking and improving such a process becomes much easier because only those parts of the process need to be changed that are improved, whereas other parts can be reused. In summary, instead of thinking about API as an "Application Programming Interface", you can think of an API being useful for "Automation, Processes, and Innovation", and then you have a much better way of understanding and remembering the value that APIs bring to organizations today.
