This easy high school art lesson is great for middle or high school art classes as well and is perfect for distance learning or art in the classroom. Using reference images and the x grid method of drawing, beginner artists learn how to scale an image and draw using simple guide marks. This simple line drawing art project helps students learn to focus on getting their scale, proportions, and relationships right before moving on to add details. This is one of the very fist drawing lessons I do in my Introduction to Art class because it is simple enough that every student can be successful. They learn how to use the grid as guide marks so that they get placement of the bigger shapes and forms in the right spot before they begin drawing smaller details. I've found the traditional grid method of drawing to be a lot more confusing. Using the x grid is simple and students only add guide marks if they need them. Included in this video are 10 handouts with different gridded reference images, rubrics, and links to a video demonstration that students can click digitally or scan on the printed version. Both PDF and Google Slide formats are included to save time and fit your classroom needs. This art lesson is great as a first project in an introduction to art class or and s a refresher for more seasoned artists. These are the first two lessons in my introduction to art curriculum. Contour line drawing helps build observational drawing skills and is also frequently the framework that artists use to begin more complex detailed drawings.
