Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Special Thanks to Aman. :) Sādhu, Mama nāma Andy. Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Western Ashokan Prakrit language. Part 1: Prakrit Language Prakrit languages are Middle Indo-Aryan languages and among the oldest Indian languages used in inscriptions and edicts. Their history can be traced from the Pre-Mauryan era to the Gupta era, during which regional dialects developed and eventually gave rise to India's modern regional languages. Prakrit is derived from Sanskrit but is easier to speak, with less phonetic stress than Sanskrit. The oldest form of Prakrit is visible in the Edicts of Emperor Ashoka, often referred to as Devānamapiyena Piyadasi, meaning "Beloved of the Gods, Lord Priyadarsi" in Prakrit. These edicts, written on rocks and pillars across South Asia, were inscribed in Brahmi and Kharosthi scripts. The edicts represent a significant linguistic milestone and reflect the Western Ashokan Prakrit dialect, found in inscriptions from Girnar and Sopara. This dialect is closely related to the later Maharashtri Prakrit, considered an early form and ancestor of Marathi. Part 2: Culture and People The Edicts of Ashoka served as a moral and cultural guide, promoting Dhamma (a standard morality). These inscriptions reveal Ashoka’s personal beliefs and philosophy, highlighting his efforts to spread moral values and maintain harmony among his subjects. Ashoka’s edicts frequently mention the Brahmanas and Sramanas (a collective term for Buddhists, Jains, Ajivikas, and others), advocating peaceful coexistence and tolerance among these groups. The edicts also describe the administration, public works, and diplomatic relations with the Hellenistic kingdoms and independent South Indian states. The Kalinga War was a pivotal event in Ashoka’s life. Witnessing the immense loss of life, Ashoka renounced violence and embraced peace and universal harmony, replacing the bherighosa (war drum) with the dhammaghosha (drum of morality). His edicts narrate his journey toward Buddhism, documenting his pilgrimages, donations, and the construction of 84,000 stupas to safeguard Buddha’s relics. In addition to Prakrit, Ashoka issued Greek and Aramaic inscriptions in Helleno-Iranian regions of his empire, reflecting his administration’s multilingual and multicultural approach. These inscriptions offer insights into the culture, diplomacy, and governance of the Mauryan Empire, highlighting its emphasis on universal harmony and moral conduct.
