Straying of snakes to human dominated landscape has always been a concern to Forest Department as well as public. Kerala Forest Department in collaboration with Wildlife Trust of India, an NGO working on conservation of Forest and wildlife, launched an android application, named SARPA (Snake Awareness Rescue and Protection Application), to assist the rescue of snakes that enter into human habitation. The application is aimed to facilitate scientific rescue of snakes by causing minimum harm to the snake and human. Till now Kerala Forest Department have trained over 900 volunteers for doing the scientific snake rescue. Anyone can download and install the app from google play store using the link below. Presence of a snake can be reported by general public using the app. All Forest Department officials having jurisdiction of the area as well as nearby snake rescue volunteers trained by Kerala Forest Department will get alerted in the app. One rescue volunteer will be assigned the job of rescuing the snake and he will rush to the spot using google map navigation. After rescue, the snake will be released back to its natural habitat. All rescue operations will be closely monitored by Forest Department using the app. This app has many other features like locating a nearest hospital having snake bite treatment in case of emergency along with contact number. Phone numbers of all Forest Department Officers and trained snake rescuers are provided in the App. People can also find phone numbers of officials having jurisdiction of their area and also all the nearby snake rescuers easily using the application, in case of emergency. App has got many awareness materials regarding snake bite and snakes of Kerala. The app also serves as a platform for identifying species of snake.
