Peter Cardwell has John McTernan, former advisor to Tony Blair, on to the show for a rundown of the main issues affecting the new Labour government. John says that means testing the winter fuel allowance is the right thing to do, saying "I don't see why a millionaire, or a millionaire's household should receive the winter fuel allowance'. This action is being taken simultaneously to Ofgem saying it is increasing its price cap as homes approach the winter months. According to the regulator, the average household energy bill is to increase by £149 from October. John surprises Peter when the discussion turns to how Labour have dealt with train unions. He says that if it were up to him, he'd "close down LNER" and "I'd lock out the workers".
