Voter ID, voting expansion bills advance in Pa. State House

Two bills that would significantly change the voting process in Pennsylvania have been advanced to the floor of the State House of Representatives. Bill 771, which a bipartisan bill primarily sponsored by Republicans, would require voter ID for in-person voters and creates new ways for voters to prove their identity at the polls. Bill 1396, authored by House Speaker Joanna McClinton, would expand voting in the state through in-person early voting and an expansion of voting drop boxes. The bill would also allow counties to pre-canvass mail-in ballots for a week prior to election day. Both bills were approved 14-12 in the State House, though all 12 Republicans on the committee voted for Bill 771 and against Bill 1396. Two Democrats voted for Bill 771, allowing it to be advanced.
