Polyps are small grape-like structures inside the womb. They may be soft and formed by an exaggerated growth of the lining of the womb or they may be a hard tumor-like i.e a fibroid polyp. Polyps may cause various problems: 1) It may cause mid-cycle spotting i.e spotting after the periods have finished and before the next one begins. 2) It may cause infertility since the polyp does not allow the embryo to implant inside the womb. 3) It may cause bleeding even after the periods have stopped due to menopause, what is known as post-menopausal bleeding. 4) In polyps that have been around for a very long especially the elderly, there is always a small possibility of malignancy setting into it. Polyps are quite easily and quickly removed via Hysteroscopy with the help of scissors. The procedure takes just a few minutes and is usually a daycare procedure.
