Puzzle Pictures: The Weirdest Type of Film

Life do be weird sometimes. The Puzzle Picture, or the Jigsaw Films, as this video essay will make perfectly clear, is hard to explain. Located in the Uncanny Valley where the surrealist film almost meets the conventional movie, the Puzzle Picture is a complex genre which contains some kind of mystery which drives the story forward. That mystery is never explained and leaves viewers with a sense of intentional incompletude and gives room for numerous interpretations (it can never give you the option of reading it as either/or). Puzzle Pictures often deal with memories, misremembrances and the blurry line between fact and fiction. You rarely know what is real and what is imagined, but, unlike in surreal films or anarchic comedies, you know there is a distinction and if you could only grasp it, the whole thing would make perfect sense. It's because you can't grasp it that they are puzzles. Puzzle Pictures often contain characters without names or whose identity is a mystery, because identity and its unknowability is commonly a theme of such stories. Some Puzzle Pictures discussed are Alain Resnais's "Last Year at Marienbad", "Muriel" and "Hiroshima Mon Amour"; David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive", "Lost Highway" and "Twin Peaks"; Peter Greenaway's "The Draughtsman's Contract"; and the Coen brothers' "Barton Fink". Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" came close to being a Jigsaw Film, as did Darren Aronofsky's "mother!". Christopher Nolan never made a Puzzle Picture. Enjoy.
