Fighting Malaria Using Drones

Malaria is an ancient disease that continues to devastate some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. In 2019, an estimated 409,000 people died after contracting it, with children under the age of five making up 67% of those casualties. 90% of cases are in Sub-Saharan Africa. Researchers from the Vector Biology Department at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine have teamed up with the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme to find new ways to help combat malaria. They enlisted the services of local Malawi drone pilots through the Crowddroning by GLOBHE platform. The drone pilots collect aerial mapping data, which can help find malaria mosquito breeding sites. This drone data is critical to studying mosquito breeding patterns and improving larval source management (LSM) efforts.
