Original Song: Imprisoned XII · Ave Mujica Ave Mujica - The Die is Cast - #10 • Imprisoned XII Piano Arrangement by Justin Wai -------------- As Ave Mujica nears its end, I'm feeling a little torn about the recent episodes' developments, including this song. On one hand, I absolutely love the arrangement and powerful vocals, and the lyrics are sweet in a vacuum. But I still can't shake the very uncomfortable feeling that, ultimately, what Uika feels is very unhealthy, and there are still a TON of unresolved problems between the girls. Simply reuniting Ave Mujica doesn’t solve much… Nonetheless, I’ll remain cautiously optimistic that the series can stick the landing with its final episode. This song is felt in compound time but starts with an introduction in 3+2, making for either a 9/8+6/8 set of 2 bars or a 15/8 bar (yikes!). Once the verse begins, there are a LOT of intricate piano decorations (or 'ear candy') that Sakiko plays. Similar to my Georgette Me Georgette You arrangement, I stubbornly try to include as much of it as possible while still needing to play the melody in the middle voice. I also had to balance this with the small 'la-la' backup vocal lines the other girls sing! I think these covers have really helped hone my three-voice technique and arranging style—while it still takes practice to voice all the intricate parts correctly, the overall vision came much more naturally to me this time. Of course, the big climactic moments are in the choruses, where Uika desperately sings "I want" to long-held notes while Sakiko fills in the same Gsus arpeggiated motif in between. Unfortunately, on piano, the best we can do is imagine that the big chord sustains for that long—when in reality, it can’t quite replicate what Uika’s voice does. Making those jumps to play the arpeggiated line every time also took some practice. I struggled a bit with how to articulate those big chords since I needed enough power to sustain the note as long as possible without making it sound harsh, which would clash with Uika’s vocals and ruin the song’s atmosphere. Perhaps the end result is still a bit on the harsh side, but I think supporting it with a fuller bass helps a lot. That’s it for this week’s arranger’s commentary!
