The skeleton performs the number of functions including protection and supporting weight. Different types of bones have differing shapes related to their particular function. So the bones were characterised based on the sapes. There are four major types of bones. 1. Long bones Examples: Femur, lower limbs (tibia, fibula, femur, metatarsals and phalanges); (humerus, radius, ulna, metacarpals and phalanges). 2. Short Bones (scaphoid, lunate, triquetral, hamate, pisiform, capitate, trapezoid, and trapezium), tarsals in the ankles (calcaneus, talus, navicular, cuboid, lateral cuneiform, intermediate cuneiform, and medial cuneiform) 3. Flat Bones skull (occipital, parietal, frontal, nasal, lacrimal, and vomer), thoracic cage (sternum and ribs), and the pelvis (ilium, ischium, and pubis). 4. Irregular Bones the vertebrae, irregular bones of the vertebral column, protect the spinal cord.
