3 Methods for teaching reading

Teaching a child how to read is one of the most important things a parent or educator will do. There are several different methods for learning to read and not every child will benefit from them equally. It’s important to know your learner and select the most appropriate approach or combination of approaches based on their strengths and learning preferences. In this video, Liz Loly, an experienced teacher, parent, and dyslexia advocate, explains three general methods for reading and shares ways to make learning to read enjoyable. This video is based on the following article from the Read and Spell Blog: https://www.readandspell.com/methods-... Read to the child as often as possible - develop a routine. 2. Read books on topics that interest the child. 3. Let the child take ownership of their reading material - visit bookshops and libraries. 4. Use graded readers to gradually increase the challenge and return to easier books for pleasure and confidence. 5. Discuss what you read and what you see on each page. 6. Don’t compare children - difficulty with learning to read is not a direct reflection on intelligence. 7. Don’t apply pressure - try to avoid introducing negative associations with reading, learning and school. 8. If a child doesn’t enjoy reading and has difficulty learning to read, talk to their teacher about your concerns and ask for their advice - it may be an indication of a specific learning difference such as dyslexia. “Learning to read in the most effective way for them will have a huge impact on their self esteem, attainment and future success.” - Liz Loly Video link:    • 3 Methods for teaching reading   For more videos about dyslexia, subscribe to the TTRS YouTube Channel:    / ttrsuk   To read more about the positives associated with dyslexia and discover some helpful tips on identifying and managing a language-based learning difference, visit the Read and Spell Blog https://www.readandspell.com/blog hosted by Touch-type Read and Spell (TTRS).
