Like, comment and subscribe for more videos Derinkuyu Underground City Derinkuyu Underground City is located in the Cappadocia region, on the Nevşehir - Niğde highway and 30 km from Nevşehir. It is an underground city carved into the rocks in Derinkuyu district.  It was discovered by chance in 1963 by a villager who wanted to renovate his house, and was opened to visitors in 1965.  Although its exact date is unknown, it is said that Derinkuyu was used in the Protohitite, Hittite, Roman and Byzantine periods. As a matter of fact, the marble eagle statue found here proves the Roman influence, while the missionary school and the church prove the Byzantine influence.   The first Christians who escaped from the persecution of Rome in the century, reached Cappadocia via Antakya and Kayseri and established underground cities in the region. In these cities, which were built for long-term shelter, there are areas where physical and social basic needs such as churches, barns, wineries, missionary schools, water wells, food warehouses and ventilation pipes can be met.  The people, who met their needs such as shelter, nutrition and education, also ensured their security with the narrow tunnels they built between the floors and areas and the large stone wheels that they added to these tunnels from time to time and that ensure the closure of the tunnel in case of any danger.  It is predicted that if all floors of Derinkuyu Underground City, which has only 8 floors have been cleaned and opened to visitors today, are cleaned, the total depth of the city will increase from 50 meters to 85 meters and the number of floors will be around 12-13.
