Navalny supporters defy police at St Petersburg memorial

People in St. Petersburg continued on Monday (February 19) to lay flowers at the makeshift memorials dedicated to Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny who was pronounced dead in a north-western Siberian penitentiary colony. The local authorities send people to remove the flowers, but the citizens keep coming and bringing new ones. One of the memorials is located at the Field of Mars, the burial ground for the victims of 1917 Russian revolution. Another location is the memorial to the victims of purges during the reign of Soviet ruler Joseph Stalin - on the embankment of Neva River opposite to notorious Kresty (Crosses) prison. Political inmates made the majority of its population in the first half of 20th century regardless of regime, be it Tsar, democratic Provisional Government or Bolsheviks.
