Tim Burton’s Superman Lives, the Superman film that never came to be starring Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel, would have featured Brainiac as the primary antagonist. Superman Lives had different titles and scripts attached to it before it was canceled, but all of those converged on Brainiac’s presence. In one version of the film, Brainiac would have merged with Lex Luthor, which curiously happened years later in the DC Animated Universe’s Justice League Unlimited. In other versions of the script, Brainiac aligned himself with Luthor before unleashing Doomsday on Earth. The robot spiders that were supposed to be in Superman Lives appeared during Nicolas Cage’s Superman cameo in The Flash. However, it does not seem like they were meant to resemble anything tied to Brainiac. Despite never appearing in a theatrical movie, Brainiac received a live-action adaptation in DC’s Krypton show. Krypton’s Brainiac was played by Blake Ritson, and the character was crafted mostly with practical effects and a practical suit. Whether Brainiac will be in Superman: Legacy remains to be seen, but the villain’s theatrical debut is long overdue considering how many Superman movies there have been already.
