Dialogue is the life blood of TV and film. We writers do so much via dialogue. However, while screen dialogue sounds like natural speech, it's actually very carefully constructed. It's devised to sound just like real life but to be very condensed, very focussed . In real life conversations are full of pauses, repetitions, unfinished sentences , 'ums' and 'ahs', people responding to the listener's facial expressions, all sorts of things. Just record a few conversations! So how do you punch up the impact of your dialogue? New writers will often add a lot of dialogue, feeling that it will clarify what's going on in the characters' heads. Of course, that's vital. But lengthy dialogue very rapidly gets boring - very rapidly indeed. In the next two little Masterclass Minis I'm going to show you how dialogue shortened in a very special way can transmit exactly what characters are thinking - with great impact.
