Bernard Tschumi - Glass Walls, Glass Ramps: Deviations from the Normative

Lecture date: 1999-10-20 If you are pushing an architectural concept as far as you can, you should attempt to achieve a level of technological innovation. Historically, architects have produced some of their most significant work by pushing technology to its next stage. Bernard Tschumi is known as a designer of technologically innovative work, and his work on the Alfred Lerner Hall at Columbia University is no exception. Designed in collaboration with a team of engineers, it adopts dimensions of glass previously unused in the USA, and intersupporting frames of ramps and wall that are creative interventions in the field of engineering. The building has been designed to fit into the original 1890s masterplan for the site while also providing some of the most innovative and programmatic spaces of the late twentieth century. Tschumi taught at the AA from 1970 to 1979. In 1988 he became Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University.
