"One Returns. One Is Ready” was a fight between undefeated “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez aka “Dinamita”. This fight was competed at a 144pound catchweight, and this is the first time that Marquez had fought above 135 pounds while Mayweather had campaigned at 147 pounds since 2005. Prefight records; Mayweather 39(25)-0, Marquez 50(37)-4-1. Entering the bout, Mayweather who was a 2.5-1 betting favorite had notable victories over Jesús Chávez, Carlos Baldomir, Carlos Hernandez, Justin Juuko, Gregorio Vargas, Ricky Hatton, Zab Judah, DeMarcus Corley, Sharmba Mitchell, Carlos Gerena, Victoriano Sosa, Arturo Gatti, Angel Manfredy, Genaro Hernandez, Oscar De La Hoya, Diego Corrales & Jose Luis Castillo (2x). Note: His first win over Castillo was questionable as most observers thought Floyd was outworked in most rounds. On the other hand, Marquez had commendable wins against Rocky Juarez, Robbie Peden, Terdsak Jandaeng, Juan Diaz, Joel Casamayor, Victor Polo, Orlando Salido, Agapito Sanchez, Derrick Gainer, Daniel Jimenez, Alfred Kotey, Manuel Medina & Marco Antonio Barrera. In the official weigh in, Marquez and Mayweather weighed 142 pounds and 146 pounds respectively. Thus, Floyd was fined $600,000 ($300,000 per pound as stipulated in the contract). Later on, it was revealed that Mayweather’s camp submitted a last minute change in the contract just a few days prior to the weigh in, which allowed Floyd to weigh up to 147 pounds to avoid paying additional fine to the NYSAC on top of the fine due to Marquez’s camp. After a largely feeling out opening round, Mayweather thoroughly dominated Marquez who clearly was not ready to fight above 135; having no warm up fights to prepare against an undefeated elite veteran in Mayweather coupled with the slight weight advantage held against him. Floyd scored a knockdown with a flush left hook in the second round. Through most of the first half, Mayweather’s left hook was ultra sharp and found its mark with ease while his patented right hand started to land with metronome precision around the halfway mark till the final bell. Marquez to his credit remained determined all the way despite being outclassed. He had his best moment in round 5 where he connected twice with his signature overhand rights. After 12 rounds, Mayweather improved his unbeaten record to 40(25)-0 with scores of 118-109, 119-108 & 120-107.
