Former WBA & WBC Heavyweight Champion "Terrible" Tim Witherspoon takes on Cuban defector and former Olympic Gold Medalist Jorge Luis González in the undercard of the Lennox Lewis vs Ray Mercer main event. Prefight records; Witherspoon 44(29)-4, González 26(25)-1. At this point, González’s only loss was in his 1st (and only) world title fight against reigning WBO Heavyweight Champion Riddick Bowe who disposed off him via KO6 in Jun 1995. Going into the fight, the 31 year old González had a notable win over Renaldo Snipes while the 38 year old Witherspoon had defeated top oppositions such as Renaldo Snipes, Greg Page, Tony Tubbs, James Tillis, James Smith, José Ribalta, Carl Williams, Floyd Cummings & Frank Bruno. Despite being past his prime, the 17 year veteran did not have a hard time against the former amateur star as he had the upper hand for the most part en route to capturing the 45th win of his career. In round 2, Witherspoon began to work the body with right hands to slow González down. In round 3, González was floored with a left hook followed by an overhand right. In round 5, González was decked for the 2nd time with a barrage of lefts and rights to the head for over a minute which prompted his manager Louis DeCubas to wave a towel thus referee Joe Santarpia called a halt to the bout without finishing the 10 count with only 8 seconds left to the bell. Unbeaten 23 year old Michael Grant and 25 year old Vernon Forrest won their fights in the same card and improved their unblemished records to 18(14)-0 and 18(15)-0 respectively. In the main event, Lewis triumphed via a hard fought MD10 over the game albeit defeated Mercer.
