QuakeCoRE Seminar: Seismic Strengthening of Precast Diaphragms with Fibre Reinforced Polymers (2025)

QuakeCoRE Seminar Series: Seismic Strengthening of Precast Diaphragms with Fibre Reinforced Polymers Presenter: Enrique del Rey Castillo (University of Auckland) This Seminar was held on 16 May 2025. Abstract: Many existing buildings fail to meet modern seismic standards, with floor diaphragms often unable to properly transfer forces during earthquakes due to insufficient reinforcement, increased demands, or poor detailing. While Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP) offer promising strengthening solutions thanks to their versatility and strength-to-thickness ratio, current design methods rely on limited research using thin, short FRP ties without proper understanding of the underlying mechanics. Our comprehensive research programme, supported by the New Zealand Government and industry partners across Aotearoa New Zealand and the USA, is addressing these knowledge gaps. We've analysed over 1800 historical data points and conducted 100+ new tests on thick and long FRP ties, both anchored and unanchored. Additionally, we've completed over 50 tests on flexural and shear strengthening of diaphragms and examined three-dimensional deformations at floor-beam connections. This presentation offers preliminary insights into best practices for FRP strengthening of concrete floor diaphragms, with research continuing through 2025/2026 to include collector testing, large-scale diaphragm testing, and advanced analytical modelling. Bio: Enrique obtained his Master of Engineering in structural engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, his home town, in Spain. He then joined the Structural Analysis of Historical Constructions (SAHC) master programme to learn more about advanced structural design, seismic actions and the behaviour of existing heritage buildings. This programme was taught jointly at two universities in the Czech Republic and Portugal. His experience with the research project within the master programme motivated him to enrol at the University of Auckland to complete a PhD in seismic strengthening of concrete structures with Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP). Enrique is now a lecturer at the University of Auckland who is dedicated to preparing the next generation of engineers, further enhance the industry's knowledge and use of reinforced concrete, and contribute as much as possible to reduce the environmental impact of the construction industry.
