Explaining the China-India border dispute. The China India border has been in contention for over 100 years. There have been multiple wars and conflicts over the China-India border over that time, and even battles in recent times leaving two dozen soldiers dead from hand-to-hand combat skirmishes. As with most border disputes, the China-India border has colonial roots. The two contested regions include Aksai-Chin in the North West, which India claim as their own, and the McMahon line in the Arunachal Pradest, in the East. Both regions are sparsely populated but neither country wants to give up territory. The border regions were agreed by British India and Tibet during the colonial period, but China claim that Tibet was not an independent soverign government at the time, but instead was a renegade province with no right to agree border rules. For this reason China claim the accords are invalid. Previous escalations at the China India border have left hundreds dead, and the capacity for rapid escalation between two nuclear superpowers has lead to sommething of a truce. Both sides have decided not to arm their border troops with firearms. Instead both armies at the China India border are fighting hand-to-hand. India claims the recent skirmishes in May 2020 were caused by China seeking to distract from the developing coronavirus pandemic at home, and was a way to rouse nationalistic sympathies and party support.
