Sinkholes are cavities in the ground that form when water erodes, underlying rock layer. Sinkholes are often funnel-shaped, with the wide end open at the surface and the narrow end at the bottom of the pool. Sinkholes vary from shallow holes about 1 meter deep, to pits more than 50 meters deep. How Sinkholes Forms- Sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or rocks that can naturally be dissolved by groundwater. Water from rainfall collects in cracks in the rock. These cracks are called joints. Slowly, as the limestone dissolves and is carried away, the joints widen & the ground above them becomes unstable and collapses. The most damaged sinkholes occur in Florida, Texas. In India, they have occurred in the Jodhpur area. Two types of sinkholes exist- One forms when the roof of a cave collapses and exposes the underground cavern. The second type forms when water dissolves the rock underneath soil and creates an underground chasm. Without rock to support it, the soil layer collapses and creates a hole on the surface.
