#SCOSoundbites – The Sword and the Scroll Concert: An Evening of Concertos III Date: 11 June 2022 Pipa: Yu Jia Pipa is a highly versatile and expressive instrument that has enjoyed a rich history spanning many eras, nations and cultures, resulting in its immense repertoire. Traditional works for the pipa follow one out of two distinct compositional styles: the court, or the battlefield. Works of a military nature depict rugged landscapes and epic battles, while works of a lyrical nature evoke Imperial song and dance performances from the glorious Tang dynasty, and the refined Jiangnan culture and its exquisite scenery. The versatility of the instrument enables the portrayal of scenes as diverse as the heavily fortified borderlands, to the innermost thoughts of princesses in remote castles, to the romances of the swashbuckling swordfighters. This work seeks to combine the strident registers of the instrument used in military pieces and the unique vibrato and note-bend techniques used in lyrical pieces to showcase its capabilities and the diversity of its musical language. In addition to its traditional core, the work incorporates modern elements that would resonate with contemporary audiences. Composed by Sun Jing who is a protégé of Professor Fan Wei in the Pipa and Professor Li Bin Yang in Music Composition, Sun Jing graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music. She later furthered her studies in music composition in the Conservatory.
