3 Tips to Be Cyber Smart

Spotlight on Cybersecurity Awareness Month – Be Cyber Smart! The National Cyber Security Alliance and Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency have designated October Cybersecurity Awareness Month. There is no better time than now to focus on ways to protect your business and personal life from cyber threats. Here are three things you can do to be Cyber Smart: 1. Have Strong Passwords and Multi-Factor Authentication • Using a weak password is like leaving your door unlocked…it’s only a matter of time until your password is breached. • To make a strong password, use a mix of letters and numbers, along with a few special characters. • However, even strong passwords can be cracked. • We highly recommend using Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). • MFA adds a second source of validation to your accounts, like a phone or token, to verify your identity before granting access. • While a password can be hacked, it’s very difficult to both break a password and an expiring token. • MFA dramatically lowers the risk of accounts being hacked. 2. Back Up and Protect Your Data • Having a plan to back up your data is critical. • Whether you get hit by ransomware or a simple hard drive failure, not knowing how to restore important data or files can be troublesome. • First, decide what kind of data is most important to you. • Then, make sure you have a plan to be able to access that data if it is lost, corrupt, or held for ransom. • Once you know what you are looking to protect and how important it is, you can start thinking about things like: o How much time you can go without the data (recovery time objective or RTO) o How far back you may need to go (recovery point objective or RPO). • These things will help determine the best solution to back up and protect your data. 3. Keep Your Technology Products Up To Date • Every device you use needs to be kept updated so that it can be supported. • These devices can range from your standard desktop PC to the latest smartphone, even your smart TV or refrigerator. • When new vulnerabilities are discovered, manufacturers issue patches and updates to address these flaws. • You must understand how to support and update your devices. • Many devices update automatically, but you need to ensure that the updates are being applied to your devices • It’s also important to make sure that the vendors who sold these products are still supporting them. • The last thing you want is to have a vulnerable device with no way to fix a security flaw. Wrapping Up Taking these three basic steps will dramatically reduce your risks of a security incident and aren’t very difficult to implement, no matter your level of technical expertise.
