Dancing the Algorithm

Fundamentally starting with the broader question of “How do we dance collectively?”, Dancing the Algorithm found itself negotiating the space between dancing bodies and computational logic. Driven as a process-led inquiry, the project is a duet of computational fragments with movements learnt, generated and regenerated from individually coded movement DNA to expand on the tools for dance-making and performance. In this session, the team shared selected documentation of their experimentations with motion capture technology, as well as a prototype of the system in action. A performance-lecture demonstrating dancing living and digital bodies served as a type 01 of a living dance archive, whilst reflected on the experimentations in collective dance dynamics and the potential of collaborating with the machine for artistic expression. About the team: Dapheny Chen, independent dance artist SERIAL CO_, creative technology studio led by Jake Tan and Ernest Wu About the Performing Arts x Tech Lab 2023/24 The Performing Arts x Tech Lab is a new partnership between the National Arts Council and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, with Keio-NUS CUTE Center as technology consultant. The Lab seeks to support innovation and experimentation through seeding collaboration between arts and technology fields. It aims to encourage arts practitioners to explore the possibilities of integrating technology into their practice. The 2023 edition of the Lab supports practitioners who work in the performing arts or with performance in general (i.e. theatre, dance, music, inter or cross-disciplinary forms, performance practice), who wish to work with technologists for the purposes of experimentation, prototyping or research and development. It is hoped that through the Lab, artists and technologists can collaborate to transform artistic creation, enrich artistic practice or explore new forms of expression.
