Director Kathryn Bigelow Shares Her Favorite Films
You've got to hand it to Kathryn Bigelow. Not only is she the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director (for 2008's The Hurt Locker), but she's responsible for Point Break — the original, not the remake, accept no substitutes — one of the most action-packed and “bromantic” cult classics of all time. Her latest is Detroit, a reckoning with the real violence that consumed the Motor City one scorching summer half a century ago, and it feels especially timely in the wake of Black Lives Matter and the Flint water crisis. So which movies does she count among her inspirations? Well, she likes winners: For starters, almost all of them are made by fellow members of the Best Director club. Most importantly, she seems to value, in her own work as well as others’, a potent blend of pulse-pounding action and heart-driven human drama.
