The castle, the chapel, the library, and the university were all gone. Over 200,000 civilians and soldiers were now encircled by the Red Army, and there was no way out. It was April of 1945, and East Prussia was overwhelmed by more than one million Soviet soldiers. Still, the men in Fort Five, the heaviest fortification in Königsberg, held their ground for days against brutal engagements and superior odds.
