This is my NEW 'Grey Squirrel ' with an added second verse and a video of an actual squirrel swishing its tail and crinkling its nose! "Grey Squirrel Swish Your Bushy Tail" is another creative movement song I grew up with. I added a second verse to this old-time favorite. One day I noticed a kind of reddish-brown squirrel while walking in the park. Researching a bit on the color of squirrels I found the eastern gray squirrel has predominantly gray fur, but it can have a brownish color. The western squirrels appear in a variety of colors, which include black, gray, brown, cream, and red. I found such diversity in squirrels I never knew existed until creating this video. Thinking perhaps this song could be sung as well as 'Brown Squirrel' or 'Red Squirrel'. There are even black squirrels in different areas of our country and worldwide. I'm always one for changing the song, so add the squirrel's color in your area. It's incredible how, as teachers of young children, we constantly learn and gain knowledge through our teaching. Squirrel Activities Squirrels In The Trees (for preschool and up) Set up: Empty indoor or outdoor space Children divided into threesome Specific Goal: Spatial Awareness, directionality, and Body Awareness Procedure: 1)Two children join hands to form a Tree. The third child is 'The squirrel in the tree'. Extra "Squirrels" are located within the space, though not in any 'Trees'. 2)The teacher calls out, "Run, Squirrels!" All "Trees raise their arms while all 'Squirrels attempt to locate in a Tree. 3)After several turns, rotate children so every child has a chance to be in a "Squirrel in the Tree." Squirrel Collecting Nuts Game What you need: nuts - (if no nut allergies at home or classroom) or any kind of object to pretend to be nuts, roll up the foil into balls, styrofoam peanuts, etc. nests- Paper circles, rope, yarn, or collect twigs to make squirrel nests Squirrels Collecting Nuts (use collected acorns or un-shelled nuts (if no nut allergies in the classroom or at home) or use Children pretend to be squirrels gathering nuts (use some type of circle (nest) for “squirrels” to put their “nuts” in). This can be a game with music. When the music stops, the “squirrels” go “home” to a circle made from rope, yarn, etc. Take away one each time the music stops so that the “squirrels” have to share “homes.” Squirrels Acorn Hunt Children pretend to be squirrels and search for paper or real acorns (if they have no nut allergies at home or in the classroom) for a specified amount of time. Throw or scatter them and have children collect them in a bag. At the end of the time, count to see who has the most or how many each child has found.
