Both are good reads for anyone interested, but I would especially recommend the former, which goes into other aspects of metal’s cultural impact, such as moral panics, as well as going more in depth into certain aspects of gender, in particular relating to masculinity, touched on in this essay. Walser’s book demonstrates a clear and accurate understanding of gender as a social construct that holds up well enough to have been written by a trans person today. But to the best of my knowledge Walser is a cis guy, and this book was published in 1993. It's always really cool to see evidence of people having such an understanding at a time when trans and gender issues were less in the public eye, and a reminder that age isn't an excuse.
