Exploring Ningbo (宁波) — We Were Amazed by The Rich History and Modern Vibes of This Chinese City

Ningbo, China — where modern life and history meet. We finally visited Ningbo, a beautiful and underrated city in Zhejiang Province, eastern China — and we were genuinely surprised by how much it had to offer. Just a short flight from Jeju, South Korea, Ningbo welcomed us with its blend of ancient history, riverside charm, and (mostly) peaceful atmosphere. Located about 2 hours south of Shanghai by high-speed train, Ningbo is one of China’s oldest cities, with a trading history that dates back thousands of years. It was once a key port along the Maritime Silk Road and is home to Tianyi Ge, the oldest private library in Asia, and Laowaitan (The Old Bund), which actually predates Shanghai’s Bund by around 20 years. 🗓 We visited on May 1st, during China’s Labour Day holiday. While some tourist spots were busy, others were surprisingly calm. The weather was mostly sunny with a bit of wind and one brief rain shower. Temperatures were warm — around 24°C and above, making it a great time to explore. 🏨 We stayed near Ningbo Railway Station, at the Vienna Hotel, which was reasonably priced and very conveniently located for getting around the city.
