(27 Feb 1980) More than 130 passengers and crew aboard a China airlines Boeing 707 narrowly escaped death on Feb 27 when the plane lost two engines and caught fire on landing at Manila airport. Passengers and crew members of the doomed Boeing had to run for their lives when the aircraft caught fire and broke up on landing after a flight from Taipei. The original official toll was 132 saved and three missing but no bodies were found and those unaccounted for were belived to be all right. Many of the survivors had to jump several yards to the ground when an emergency escape chute went up in flames. Seventy four of the passengers were unhurt, 10 were slightly injured and 37 suffered severe burns or fractures. Ten of the 11 crew members were hospitalised including the 50-year-old pilot Captain Wu Hung, a veteran with over 30,000 hours of flying time. The passengers were mainly toursits from Taiwan but also included Americans, Japanese, West Germans, Costa-Ricans, British and Australians.
