ALBANIA: ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER ROMANO PRODI VISIT

(13 Apr 1997) English/Nat The Italian prime minister Romano Prodi has been greeted by cheering crowds in southern Albania. He arrived in the southern city of Vlora, where armed rebels are demanding the resignation of the Albanian president, Sali Berisha. Prodi is meeting the Albanian prime minister, Bashkim Fino, to discuss the role of the Italian-led multinational force that has started arriving in Albania. The Italian Premier promised insurgents they will see a marked difference in the chaos- torn country once the troops are fully deployed to ensure the safe delivery of food aid. Romano Prodi and the Albanian prime minister arrived in separate helicopters in the southern city of Vlora. Italian soldiers and rebels armed with Kalashnikovs were there to escort the two leaders. Vlora is firmly in the hands of the rebels -- it was the birthplace of the insurgency that has swept Albania in the past three months. Prodi is in the town to discuss the details of the multinational force which has begun to arrive in Albania to secure the delivery of food aid. More than ten-thousand people turned out to greet the Italian prime minister, shouting "Viva Italia" and "Down with (Albanian President) Berisha". Later, he travelled to Tirana where he met Albanian President Sali Berisha. Prodi said that Albanians would see a marked difference once a multinational force is fully deployed to help make sure food gets to the people. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There are already force operation here, you know, but the bulk of it we started here. But as you see there is a trend, we wanted something different, we wanted to prepare here today this type of co-operation that is unusual and important."
