More before and after pictures, and real reviews EFFECIVE Hair Loss Treatments Dermatologists are formally trained in disorders of skin, hair and nails. This video gives insight into the hundreds of hair disorders medical dermatologist treat. Disclaimer- I am a procedural dermatologist – this means I only perform procedure such as PRP and low level laser. I work with a team of medical dermatologist to treat hair loss disorders. As a rule I do not prescribe drugs as this needs careful monitoring at regular intervals. In summary this video only address a condition known as androgenetic alopecia – male and female pattern hair loss. I will address female pattern hair loss in another video as this is extremely complex. Hair loss is one of the most distressing disorders for BOTH male and female patients. As with all my guidelines, a diagnosis is the first step before treating or curing hair loss. This is a medical condition and a dermatologist has the highest training in the diagnosis and management of hair loss. We work as a team – medical dermatologist investigate and prescribe, laser and procedural dermatologist inject PRP and initiate laser therapy and hair transplant surgeons operate. Team work gives the patients Gold Standard management for hair loss. Medical conditions such as thyroid disorders, iron, Folate, vitamin deficiencies need to be investigated. Inflammatory disorders such as lupus, lichen planus, and alopecia aerata need to be excluded. Infections such as folliculitis and tinea capatis need to be considered. There are over 200 causes of hair loss, and this 18 minute video only covers androgenetic hair loss. Treatment options include- 1. Minoxidil topically or orally. If a foam or lotion is to be considered, both male and females should use 5% at night. If oral medication is indicated by your medical dermatologist, 1-3 mg daily should be taken. You can obtain a bespoke prescription from your physician at www.myskinpharmacy.com.au 2. DHT inhibition is another option- either Finesteride or Duasteride. Side effects and the risk benefit ratio will be discussed with your medical dermatologist. 3. PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma can be adjunctive therapy. My protocol is to inject in the areas of Norwood or Ludwig pattern baldness. 3 sessions spaced 6-8 weeks apart, followed by 2 injections annually. As stated this is NOT a stand-alone procedure. This should be conducted by a specialist and not a nurse led procedure as the pattern of hair loss is critical to results. 4. Low Level Laser emission devices in the 630-655 nm wavelength can stimulate blood flow and increase hair density. Like PRP for hair loss this is not a stand alone procedure, and needs to be combined with medical or surgical procedures. My Laser of choice is the Lutronic System as it provides exact energy delivery to the entire scalp. This is a medical and not a cosmetic laser. 5. Surgical options. FUE is the current standard of practice. Your result will be dependent on one person- the surgeon. This is not a branch, brand or franchise, nor is it a robot. Do your research and find the best specialist. FUE is the only reliable method to replace areas of baldness. I cannot stress the importance of finding the best surgeon and team of follicular unit dissectors. Like everything else in medicine, there are no short cuts.
