However, lest you get the impression that teenage woodpecker stomachs are relegated to bugs flying around, let's take a look together at what the nesting cavity looks like most of the time. It's a classic parenting chore. The adult birds spend an enormous amount of time foraging for food, mostly ants and their larvae, which they bring to their squawking chicks in the crop. And frankly, I wouldn't want to be in their shoes - the youngsters are pretty feisty, and the parents often get a good pecking from them. Finding a black woodpecker cavity suitable for filming can be quite a challenge. They usually nest pretty high; I regularly see cavities 15-20 meters above the ground. So I was happy when my friend Dušan managed to find this nice place in the woods near the Brno dam, where the birds could be filmed comfortably from the ground.
