Inside of the concentration camps of the Second World War, there were thousands of prisoners who were executed and never made it out of the barbed wire fences. At camps such as Bergen-Belsen, there was a huge amount of death, and the deadliest concentration camp of them all was Auschwitz. Inside over 1.2 million people would never make it out alive, but inside of Auschwitz was the only Scottish man to become a victim of Auschwitz and the SS. John Fletcher was an experienced soldier, who was also a French citizen who had married a French woman following the First World War. He worked in an aircraft factory, but during the German occupation of France, he was arrested by the Gestapo. John Fletcher was then transferred to prison and he was then deported to Auschwitz. However when he was registered at the camp, he was wrongfully identified as a French Jew, and because of this he may have been incorrectly killed at Auschwitz. He worked inside of Auschwitz Birkenau, but 21 days after he had been sent to Auschwitz he was killed under mysterious circumstances. His death certificate said he had 'weakness of the heart muscle,' but this usually meant someone was executed or sent to the gas chambers. But John Fletcher was the only Scottish victim of Auschwitz.
