One of the deepest and an ancient multi level underground city Derinkuyu Derinkuyu Underground City is one of the deepest , most fascinating and an ancient multi-level underground city located in the Derinkuyu district in Nevsehir Province, Turkey. Extending to a depth of approximately 85 metres (280 ft). It is large enough to have sheltered as many as 20,000 people together with their livestock and food stores. It is the largest excavated underground city in Turkey and is one of several underground complexes found throughout Cappadocia. The underground city of Derinkuyu was built to protect its inhabitants from wars and religious persecutions, able to protect 20,000 people. It was equipped with large stone doors to prevent invaders, an ingenious ventilation system, as well as a well to ensure drinking water for all citizens. It included a multitude of rooms used as kitchens, bedrooms and warehouses for food storage. The city also ensured complete autonomy from the outside world by having a school, church and cellar for the preparation of wine and oil. It also contained an adequate number of livestock. The exact date of its construction is not known, but it is believed to have been built by the Phrygians in the 8th to 7th centuries BCE, and then enlarged and used by later civilizations such as the Byzantines and the Seljuks Derinkuyu Underground City is an incredible feat of engineering and an impressive example of human ingenuity, making it a must-visit destination for those interested in history and architecture. One of the most impressive features of the Derinkuyu Underground City is its ventilation system. The tunnels were designed to allow fresh air to enter and circulate throughout the complex, and there are even wells that reach all the way to the surface to provide a source of fresh water. Derinkuyu Underground City was a secret for a long time. It wasn’t until a local man in the Nevsehir Province decided to do renovations to his home that the ancient city was discovered. After knocking down a wall he discovered a strange room and continued to dig further, exposing an intricate tunnel system with a series of cave rooms. Little did he know it at the time but he had discovered the ancient underground city of Derinkuyu. The ancient Derinkuyu underground city proves what man can achieve when a threat is made to his life. In 1985, the underground cities of Cappadocia, including Derinkuyu, were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing their importance and significance as an outstanding example of human habitation and land use. There are three main ways to get to Derinkuyu Underground City, they are: • Hiring a car • By bus • On the Green Tour As you make your way towards the entrance of the underground city, you’ll see many local vendors selling Cappadocia souvenirs. You can buy a ticket at the entrance or use your Museum Pass to enter Derinkuyu. There are restrooms at the entrance before you go into the underground city.
