Fleabanes, the Erigeron species, are a widespread genus of plants that belong to the aster family. There are several species of fleabane found in eastern North America and these pioneer species are common in disturbed areas. Fleabanes are caterpillar host plants for many species including the northern metalmark butterfly. The blooms are attractive to a wide variety of smaller native bees, honeybees, hoverflies, and smaller butterflies. They are also important browse plants for mammals like deer and rabbits, and the insects they attract help feed a wide assortment of song and game birds.
